In this week’s Friday Feature, we highlight Jason’s Connection, a non-profit organization that serves as a platform to share the latest news in the disability sphere and provide a host of resources and information – ranging from disability rights, justice information, mental health, and aging – to the community.
Jason’s Connection was founded in 2013 by Jason Harris, who has Autism. Jason earned both his M.S. in Cultural Foundations of Education and Certificate of Advanced Disability Studies from Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York. In addition to working with Jason’s Connection as their Chief Idea Officer, Jason is also the Director of Strategic Operations at LADD Inc., an organization that empowers adults with developmental disabilities to work, live, and connect with others within their communities.
At its core, Jason’s Connection believes in the power of knowledge and starting conversations about differences people may have, and, more importantly, the similarities they share. In an interview with Self-Advocates of Indiana, Jason said, “Everyone has different experiences […]. We learn to empathize with each other from seeing each other’s perspective. […] Through these conversations, we can learn.”[1] To fully embrace this viewpoint, Jason’s Connection also features on its website over four hundred blog posts that cover a wide range of topics about the numerous facets of living with a disability. While many are penned by Jason himself, the website also engages with a diverse panel of guest authors to lend their unique voice and perspective to the conversation.
Jason’s Connection remains dedicated to its mission of providing trusted, newsworthy, and impactful information regarding disability to individuals who need it, and it is their goal to create long-lasting support networks within communities to foster acceptance and empower all individuals to live their lives to the fullest and reach their highest potential.
